8/1/08 Katy’s Story:
Background from the Adopter: When Katy was six weeks old, a refrigerator dolly fell on her and broke her back.
The owner had a large family and his wife had just passed on.
Caring for the puppy was simply too much and their vet ended up taking her in.
We think she spent most of her life caged until she was ready to be fostered.
Kathy Settle became her foster mom at six months.
That’s when she really started to learn potty training and such, as well as walking.
Because of her back injury, she will tend to drop her hips to one side and drag her legs.
That usually happens only when she’s tired, but we have occasionally caught her just being lazy, hee hee!
Nonetheless, my husband and I are really trying to encourage her to walk and not drag her legs.
When she seems too tired (either from a long walk, an early morning, or a long day of play), she will drag more.
In that instance, we let her rest outside for a while in the grass.
Update by the Adopter: Hi Kathy: I thought you might like to hear how Katy has been doing.
I’m so happy to say she is fitting in to our family very well!
She and the kitties are getting along much better and she’s doing so well with the stairs.
Every day we go for at least one walk (sometimes many more) and all of our neighbors come out to say hello to her.
She has been doing better with her walking as well, except on days she goes to day care.
I think she plays so much that she gets tired by the time we get home and doesn’t feel like walking.
We constantly encourage her to walk and not drag.
Speaking of day care, she loves it!
In fact, she seems to love it so much that we opted to let her go twice a week.
She loves all the people there and they love her. They, too, work with her on walking.
Plus she has a little friend named Brodie who’s a white shepherd mix.
I watch her play sometimes before leaving and/or picking her up. It’s so cute.
She doesn’t appear to be in any pain at all. I took her to my vet who said she had great reflexes and appeared to be otherwise healthy.
She stumbles some times, but I never hear her cry. She’s usually really happy. My husband adores Katy.
In fact, he lets her get away with way more things than he does with the cats!
I am home more often so I play with her the most, but Katy goes crazy the minute he gets home.
He always plays with her and gives her so much attention. We both love her so much. She is a special girl.
Both my husband, Steve, and I have bonded with her so much.
Kay, our neighbor, adores her, as does Malinda, Steve’s assistant and fellow dog lover, who comes to visit her.
Take care,
Jennifer and Steve

6/25/2008 - This is Saral. My husband and I adopted Ash (now Zoe)
back in December. Zoe is doing great! She's growing every day and Josh and
myself are constantly amazed at how smart she is. Every night the three of us
have playtime (we generally roll a ball from one end of the house to the other
[shotgun style house] and have her chase after it) and she always cracks us up!
Not to mention she is the biggest people-dog I've ever seen. She gets so excited
when we have company that she's actually peed on a few of them. She has a hard
time getting along with the other dogs in the family because she's so playful
and most of them are really laid back, but she does have a few friends that like
to play with her. Zoe is healthy and strong and definently my best friend. She's
sleeping next to me right now, as a matter of fact
.
I'm so glad that HART is there for these animals, we're really grateful for what you're
doing. Thank You,
Sara & Josh

5/30/2008 - This is Dwayne and Chandra we recently adopted Bill and renamed him "Boomer".
He is doing fine!!! Had a few problems at the start separation anxiety but that has gone away.
My wife feels that Boomer's former owner's might have mistreated him in some way.
He doesn't' like children, some people, and he would sometimes try to attack other dogs.
But we try to reassure him that he's in a better home now. We are going to schedule some dog
training sometime in the following months so that type of behavior would be restrained.
We like to take him on long walks around the neighborhood. My wife spoils him to death!!!
I try set rules for him but my wife always like to break it for him (counter-productive).
But that's all right, I still love him. The most favorite thing he likes to do is just lay back
on our couch and just sleep.
It would be 10:00 am and you would find him there sleeping. His favorite food is
Vanilla ice cream/frozen yogurt. He likes to play tug-o-war with his favorite toys.
He's a great watchdog during the night….I guess those big ears are a lot better than ours!!!
We had him for 7 months now, and I keep wondering why we haven't gotten a dog for a long time.
We don't know his real birthday, but we designated the day we adopted him his birthday from now on.
And he does have a jealous streak when me and my wife get together.
He would growl at me and try to break us up. I always tell him "Bad dog" but sometimes that would help.
I think he's getting over that!!!
He had a great time during that last snow storm. He blends in well!!! Check out his cool boots!
Thank you very much HART for having us adopt Boomer!!! - Dwayne and Chandra

Hey guys I adopted a crazy bull terrier mix from y'all named Belle about 3 years ago, she was a hurricane Katrina puppy.
Wait crazy isn't the word...LOL actually someone had adopted this nut case before me and brought her back
because they couldn't handle her...LOL
Needless to say I fell head over heels in love and wanted to send you all some pictures.
So here she is!!!! please pass these around so all can see that she is well taken care of and loved.
By the way she is over the 40lbs she was supposed to weigh....she's a small cow...lol
All joking aside. I love this girl more than anything....the only way to describe what sh does for me is
that she makes me smile...I just look at her and smile.
Thank you all for the joy she's brought me and thank you for what you do...you're a wonderful group of people!!!

Thank you for all of your help. Robert did, indeed, adopt Blossom. She made the trip back up to Dayton, ate dinner
and played with a squeaky toy. She seems to have adapted well to a new home and is meeting the rest of the family
with glee. She is perfect!
Please also express our sincere appreciation to Margo for her help and kindness.
All of you deserve a special star for your efforts.
Uncle Bobby has been so depressed since the death of his dog. Blossom has created her own special niche in his heart
and his spirits are 200% better. What a joy! A sincere thank you to your entire organization for your concern and efforts.

Hello! My name is Jill Montgomery, and I adopted “Pearl” from Heart just over a year ago.
I have since renamed her Abby, and she is doing wonderful!
She has brought so much warmth and love into my home.
You have no idea how many times I hear “ She is just a perfect dog.”
I cannot thank you enough for matching Abby with me!

Kris,
Dottie is the best dog I’ve ever known. She has been so amazing with all the chaos that an infant brings.
And, my honest opinion, I can’t imagine having brought all that noise & drama into a house with a hearing dog.
I fully believe that one of the reasons Dottie still is so calm around the baby, is that she doesn’t hear all
the weird noises… and now that all of Adelaide’s toys make noises, too… I’m even more convinced of it.
And, she loves Adelaide & Adelaide loves her. I can’t wait until Adelaide gets bigger and they can really
be best buddies.
She has developed hip dysplasia, which is sad, but she is doing well. She gets glucosamine & pain meds every day.
Her pain meds are still pretty mild… and some days are better than others, but for the most part she still gets
around like the spastic spoiled puppy that she is. The vet assures us she’ll have MANY more years of fun &
frivolity.
Everyone always compliments us on how well behaved she is and how sweet she is. Whenever someone she doesn’t
know comes into the house… she quietly gets up and sits at the feet of whomever is holding Adelaide for about
the first 5 minutes. Then, when she decides they are okay, she’ll go about her business. This usually
includes getting petted and loved on by everyone, or hanging out with her best friend Frankie, as shown in one
of the pictures. The two of them have a very unique friendship. They play like crazy sometimes… and sometimes
they just hang out together.
Take care,
Mary

Luke (Update) – Monday Note from his foster mom - Norma. "I picked Luke
up on Saturday. I took my 16 and 14 year old nieces so they could hold him in
the back so he wouldn't be bounced around in the car. He pretty much just laid
between them and didn't look right or left. The Vet Tech gave me dry food and
some prescription wet food to give him. She said he probably would never bark
and didn't know how much sight and hearing he would get back. He is definitely
blind in one eye. When I got him home Zach (my dog) immediately took to him and
would come up to him and try to play. I held Luke a couple hours Saturday night
while we watched TV. He started noticing Zach and perked up. Come Sunday
morning when I took him outside he started playing in the leaves with Zach.
When I brought him in he went over and picked up a rope toy and he and Zach
chased each other around the dining room table. It was so cute. I made sure
they didn't rough house with that head injury. He is holding his head straight
now and did not go around in circles all day Sunday. When I left this morning,
I put his cage right next to Zach's in my bedroom so they could see each other.
As I told them goodbye and started to leave Luke whined and barked. I cried all
the way to work."
Luke when 1st Rescued
Luke –Tuesday Note from his foster mom. I couldn't wait to tell you.
When I got home after work and got Luke out I noticed something was different,
but couldn't tell what. Then he looked straight at me I saw that his blue
clouded right eye had turned almost all brown now, the color of his other one.
I went home at lunch to check on him and let him out and it was still the
clouded blue. He also is moving it back and forth with the other eye when he is
focused on something. Saturday when I picked him up it was light blue and white
and cloudy and you could not see the center of his eye. They said he was
completely blind in that eye. It looks almost like the other one now. I
couldn't believe it. This is getting scary. It must be all those prayers from
everyone. He was at least 15 feet away from me last night and saw me move my
toes! He did that little puppy pounce and attacked my toes. He thought that was
great fun. Here is an update of last night: Luke no longer walks - he
does the puppy trot now like he is on a mission; Luke holds his tail up and
wags it constantly; Luke holds his head up and straight now. Saturday you
couldn't tell he had white on his chest because he held his head so low and
tilted. Now all you see is that little white chest; Luke learned to play ball
last night and loved chasing the ball; Luke did not roll up in a ball in the
back of his crate last night - it is at the side of my bed and before I turned
the lights out Mami and Zach had their paws hanging down the top and Luke was
batting at them like a cat. When he went to sleep he did not curl up but
stretched all the way out and SNORED; Luke LOVES other dogs and cats; Luke let
out a bark this morning when the alarm went off and wanted to be the first
outside. When I carried him downstairs and out to the back yard when I put him
down he did not looked scared but stretched and yawned and then looked to see
where Zach went.Luke knows where the biscuit drawer is and went over to it this
morning and whined. If I throw a biscuit across the floor he looks in the
direction it is going and waits for it to land. He seems to be seeing VERY
good.Someone from either
the Vet Hospital or HART gave him a stuffed pig that he sleeps with and loves.
Last night he started shaking it until I put it up (I can't take that yet with
a head injury). He did get it back when he went to bed and he looked so happy
Mr. Pig was back.Luke has had several caring volunteers ask to foster or
adopt the poor little guy. He's in a great home (as you can see), and
appreciates all the love and support you have all given him. I wish there were
enough of him to go around. :)
Luke now - at Foster Home :))

| BelAir - You probably remember the kitten BelAir that we rescued with
the absolutely horrible infected eye condition. Here is an update from her
adoptive home.."Afshan, thank you for asking about Bel-Air. He is wonderful. It
doesn't slow him down a bit only having one eye. He and Sophie play all the
time and they are so much fun to watch. They have bonded very well and I am
very glad that I got them both at the same time. Bel-Air is such a sweet boy,
he is very curious and wants to put his nose into everything. He is such a joy
to me and my husband. We are both so happy that we adopted him. Thank you again
for asking about Bel-Air and taking him in and treating him. He's a great
little boy and he's lucky you gave him a second chance. As his new Mom I am
very grateful for you and Hart." GIVE YOURSELVES A GREAT BIG PAT
YOURSELVES ON THE BACK - GOOD JOB!!

I am so pleased to present to you, my new canine daughter, Olivia Grace. She
was rescued from an Ohio puppy mill. This picture was taken at the home of her
sweet foster family! I
am so grateful for my new friend Tina and her son who have given such
sacrificial love to Olivia. Foster parents are amazing! Such sacrifice knowing
that their involvement is necessary for the rescue of an animal and for
blessing complete strangers!!
Olivia, formerly known as Daisy May, was caged between 5-7 years, having one
litter of puppies after another. At the end of her "usefulness" she was rescued
from this atrocious animal hell, aka "a puppy mill" with four other furry
angels. If it weren't for these rescuing heroes, Olivia and the four other dogs
would have been shot by these so called "farmers." Olivia and all other
"breeders" are treated terribly! Olivia has a lot of fear to overcome.
A couple of months after Victoria 's death we began looking for a little one to
rescue. Susannah also needed companionship from a dog a little more her size. I
have been looking through Petfinders. On Thursday, Michael and I heard that we
were the couple chosen to adopt our little girl. We drove to Cincinnati Ohio
and picked her up on Saturday. She has already achieved wonders! After finally
catching her, she loves to be held and cuddled. She loves to run, as she hops
like a rabbit. We are working on her incredible fear of people as well as with
potty training.
HART, the animal rights organization we adopted Olivia from is incredible! In
three weeks she was groomed, given a microchip, her teeth cleaned, all shots
given and the surgery to ensure that she will never have another litter!!! She
is a joy and a love. She only weighs 5.7 lbs. Maltese are very small dogs, but
she is a little bony.
I would like to appeal to all of you to PLEASE check before purchasing a dog to
ensure that the breeders are treating animals with decency. So many pet stores
in America receive their dogs from puppy mills. Would you consider blessing one
that needs a home, whether they are sheltered or fostered? I can tell you that
all of my rescues have been precious and am so glad that Michael and I have
chosen this route. I don't think you'd be sorry either!!! For those of you who
are my Christian friends, I believe it is our Biblical honor and responsibility
to care for God's creation, including His environment and all plants and
animals. I don't know why the Church has fallen so terribly short in this
area!?! He has created our earth and it's various inhabitants with such love
and creativity. ALL of God's creation should be deemed with incredible value!
May we understand how to steward them in a way that would please Him!!
God Bless You,
Olivia Grace, Michael, janelle and all our furry and feathery children

Samantha is the happiest dog alive (as she lies here at my feet in my office)
and we are the happiest dog owners in the world. Somehow the universe brought
us all together and we couldn't imagine life without Sam. She is fortunate that
both my wife and I work at home and she always has a place to go for a good
head rub or hug. And, she gets to go for a 3 to 4 mile hike through the woods
every single day of her life. She is spoiled, fairly well mannered and smart as
a whip. We can't remember life without her. She is the PERFECT dog for us.

I just want to say thank you for the wonderful things your organization does.
As Louise will attest, I cannot say enough wonderful things about Ranger! I
just cannot believe that he was actually scheduled for euthanization. He is
such a wonderful fellow. It just breaks my heart to think of him as a puppy
being abused - I just can't bear it. He's just SO sweet, kind, and gentle.
Thank you from our family for helping to bring him into our lives, and thank
you from Ranger for saving his life. You truly saved a magnificent, noble
creature. We had our family out last weekend for our daughter's birthday, so
everyone got to meet Ranger. They all raved about what a sweet guy he is. I
told them all about your organization - I'm hoping they'll follow our example
and volunteer to be fosters/adopters! I always make sure I forward on the
foster e-mails to them!

The care, the organization, the support, the follow-up, providing the initial
things a puppy needs - the food, the collar, the leash, and signing a contract
at the end. The experience between you vs. them is night and day. I have
nothing but great things to say about HART.

Always grateful…

Cheech has already integrated himself into the family. We joke and call him
Kirby’s (my 12 year old Maltese) dog. I didn’t think I could love another dog
as much as my baby, but it is like having a second child. Just when you think
you heart is completely full...

Good Morning Cosy,
We have renamed our pet from "Powder" to "Siggy". I am very impressed with the
services and professionalism exhibited from the HART Volunteers. Please do keep
up the good work!!!!
Our neighbors are very impressed with our little Bichon and ask where we
located such a good little guy - in which the response is always with a
positive comment about the great team of volunteers at HART.
